2026 Mandarin Video Competition

Background
Responding to the "Mandarin Language Exhibition", showcasing students' proficiency in the Mandarin language will take place Saturday, March 28, 2026, at the Lyric Theatre & Culture Arts Center. Considering that some teachers and students are located far away or that some students are too young to attend in person, BGEMS has decided to add an additional competition category entitled the “Mandarin Video Competition.”
Scope
Open to students (non-native Chinese speakers, no heritage students) who are unable to attend the event in person. Participation requires a teacher’s recommendation.
Process & Schedule
Deadline is March 15th
To participate, choose a theme, record videos, and submit the videos to BGEMS website;
March 16th to March 21st
BGEMS Leadership will review all submissions and select those that meet the competition requirements and contain no inappropriate or prohibited content.
March 22th
BGEMS will publish the videos to BGEMS' TikTok account;
March 23th to March 25th 9:00 p.m.
Students may invite their family and friends to show support, and are also encouraged to appreciate other participants’ videos. (We encourage everyone watching the videos to like all entries they consider outstanding, not just those of their friends or family.)
March 28th Awards Ceremony
Winner announcement (based on the number of likes).

Suggested Video Themes
Performances
1. Performing Chinese music, such as "Jasmine Flower", any instrument is allowed;
2. Chinese kung fu, dance performance;
3. Singing Chinese songs.
Recitations
1. Reciting Chinese poetry;
2. Reading from traditional Chinese literary works ("Dream of the Red Chamber", "Journey to the West"...).
Knowledge/Experience Sharing
1. Introduction to traditional Chinese festival customs; (in Mandarin)
2. Experiencing tourism in China; (in Mandarin)
Other
1. Contents related to Mandarin Language or Chinese culture, including anything fun, interesting, or innovative that showcases aspects of the language or culture.
Award: The video with the most likes will be the winner of the Mandarin Video Competition and will win a $100 prize and a plaque.
Quality requirements for the video
1. The video must be recorded in landscape mode (to be uploaded by teachers to BGEMS website);
2. Clear and loud sound for musical instrument performance, singing, poetry recitation, and reading of famous works;
3. Festival introductions include, but are not limited to, the origin, history, traditional customs,
celebration methods, significance, and value of the festival;
4. Experience sharing includes, but is not limited to, city names, introduction of attractions, cultural experiences, food tasting, transportation, shopping, safety precautions, insights, reflections, and lessons learned during the journey.
